All ages. All Levels. All Welcome.
Kathak classes are taught by Karishma. The class is rooted in the classical form and approached with contemporary sensibilities. Students develop the skill and understanding of Kathak, at the same time as growing the physical ability to communicate through movement in an expressive and artistic way. It offers dancers to find the connection with their body, the spine, the floor and explore their relationship with space and gravity.
Learning and Progression
A clearly defined structure allows learning to take place progressively, ensuring that steps and skills learned prepare for more complex and challenging choreography, while empowering our dancers to be confident, joyful performers.
The class is structured around three focus areas:
Laya and Taal (Rhythm awareness, Recitation),
Movement Vocabulary (Footwork, Spins, Choreography), Abhinaya (use of the face and body to communicate narrative).
Performance choreography is rooted in
– dance compositions (Nritta),
– lyrical expressions (Nritya; Kavitt; Vandana etc) and
– creative dance practices
We will discuss the history and theory of Kathak.
Students will be required to keep a binder for class
Cotton Kurta / Long tunic / Dance wear and bare feet is appropriate attire.
